John Mulaney took a break from dad duty to host Saturday Night Live.
But that doesn’t mean that his wife Olivia Munn and their two children—son Malcom, 2, and daughter Méi June, 1 month—were far from his mind when the comedian stepped onto the stage Nov. 2 in New York City. In fact, the family of four’s dynamic became a key joke in his opening monologue, during which he updated the audience on his life in the two years since he last hosted.
“My wife and I just welcomed a baby girl into our family,” John noted in his speech. “We have a five-week-old daughter, and a 2-year-old son. My wife takes care of the five-week-old, and I take the 2-year-old out. And that's not fair."
“That's not an equal distribution of labor at all,” he joked. “Saying, “You have a five-week-old, I'll take a 2-year-old.’ That's like saying, ‘I'll transport this convict across state lines. You hold a potato.’”
And at the close of the show, John once again gave a sweet shoutout to his family.
“Goodnight Malcom,” he said with a wave. “Goodnight Méi.”
Yet while John joked about his and his wife’s responsibilities when it comes to the kids, the 42-year-old never hesitates to pay tribute to Olivia—especially regarding her advocacy work since her 2023 diagnosis with luminal B breast cancer.
“Olivia saving lives by speaking her truth is not surprising to me," John said during InStyle's 2024 Imagemaker Awards Oct. 24, where Olivia was honored with a Woman of Impact Award. "Olivia is constantly trying to keep me out of danger and keep me alive through a series of texts throughout our entire relationship."
But after joking about a time his wife warned him about looking out for “crazy cars” via text, John put the jokes to the side when discussing Olivia’s journey since her diagnosis. Because as he noted, her decision to share her health battle made all the difference.
"She shared her story to help anyone she could," John continued. "According to the National Cancer Institute, in the week after Olivia shared the story of her breast cancer journey, there was a 4,000 percent increase in women visiting the breast cancer risk assessment. That was the first week."
He continued, “We learned a lot from it. We learned she would need five surgeries. We learned there was a risk of lymphedema. We learned that if we had not caught it when we caught it, things could have been a lot worse."
Meanwhile Olivia, who has indeed been candid about the ups, downs and most vulnerable moments of her cancer journey, also recently shared insight into how she and John came to welcome Méi June via surrogate.
According to the Daily Show alum, welcoming another child was more complicated due to her diagnosis.
“We really wanted a little girl, and right after that we got the diagnosis,” Olivia said during a panel at Hello Sunshine’s 2nd Annual Shine Away Event connected by AT&T Oct. 5. “We had already planned to turn my eggs into embryos because when you have eggs frozen, you really don't know the quality until they're turned into embryos. So we go through that, and out of all my 26, only five were good. We had four boys, one girl.”
The 44-year-old explained that she convinced her doctor to harvest one additional round of eggs before beginning her cancer treatment, which would likely impact her fertility.
Of telling John, Olivia remembered, “I was like, ‘I know [the doctor] said we get one more girl and then we call it a day, but I won't feel good until we get two more. So I need you to just be on my side and let me go through this. I know I'm putting myself at risk, but I just have to do this.’ And he said, ‘I'll support whatever you want to do.’”
Fortunately, the treatment yielded two more female embryos, leading to the birth of their healthy little girl Sept. 14. As the New Girl alum joked, “Now we have Méi—and 26 more!”
